Memorial Day Remembrances:  On this upcoming Memorial Day, we once again pause to honor the memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms in the service of our great nation’s armed forces.  In this time of reflection, it is also fitting that we remember our CHS classmates, faculty, and staff members who are no longer with us.  Many of those individuals had a tremendous impact upon our individual and collective lives.  If you would like to honor their memory in a special way, you can do so by making a Remembrance/In-Memoriam Donation to YOUR Alumni Association.  These donations help ensure that the CAA can continue to accomplish our Partnership with the C-NP Schools in Preserving the Past, Promoting the Present, and Pursuing the Future on behalf of all students and alumni.

2022 C-NP Schools Teacher of The Year Presentation: CAA Support & Recognition

Some of YOUR Alumni Association Board were helping with the reception for the 2022 C-NP School District Teacher of the Year Presentation on April 19th. What a privilege to meet some of the outstanding administration/faculty/staff from the various schools in the District. These individuals are truly “Generational Difference Makers” in today’s world.

During the presentation ceremony, YOUR Choctaw Alumni Association was recognized as the 2021-22 C-NP Schools Citizen of The Year. What an HONOR and a SURPRISE!

YOUR CAA Board members who were present accepted this award on YOUR behalf.  However, this Honor/Award is for ALL CHS Alumni – past and present – who for many years met annually to collectively celebrate reunions and renew bonds of friendship formed during their respective CHS years. Their attendance at these reunions, fund raising efforts, and volunteer support in making the C-NP Schools Museum a reality eventually led to the formal incorporation of YOUR Choctaw Alumni Association.

We salute all these ‘Jacket Alumni who laid the foundation upon which we now stand —and— all the C-NP Schools Faculty/Staff who are currently laying the foundation for future ‘Jacket Alumni!!!

ONCE A JACKET, ALWAYS A JACKET — AND — PROUD TO BE A JACKET!!!

Presentation of 2022 CAA Ruth Elaine Shaw Memorial Scholarship & Future CAA Scholarship Plans

The Choctaw Alumni Association (CAA) awarded the inaugural Ruth Elaine Shaw Memorial Scholarship to Ms. Kayman Ross, a member of the 2022 CHS graduating class, during a presentation ceremony at the Choctaw-Nicoma Park School Board meeting on Monday, 11 April 2022.  The $2000 scholarship will be used by Ms. Ross as she pursues a Biology/Pre-Med degree focus at Oklahoma State University.

We congratulate Kayman for her exemplary academic achievements while at CHS, her initiative in completing the scholarship application process within the allotted timeframe, and her excellent research paper on C-NP Schools history and the legacy of our beloved Mrs. Shaw.  She is a most-deserving recipient of this inaugural scholarship.

The CAA is also very appreciative of the outstanding support received from David Reid, C-NP Schools Superintendent, Ms. Jackie Harris, CHS Principal, and CHS Counselors, Ms. La’Toya Jacobs and Dr. Kelly Collins in the implementation and publicity of the respective scholarship availability, application, and award procedures.

This scholarship embodies every aspect of our CAA Mission: Continuation of our ongoing Partnership with the C-NP Schools; Preservation of our Past by honoring the legacy and memory of a beloved and influential CHS faculty member, Mrs. Ruth Elaine Shaw; Promotion of the Present by facilitating CHS Alumni support of current CHS students and faculty; Pursuit of the Future by investing in the career development of future CHS Alumni like Ms. Ross.

Funding for this and future scholarships was made possible by generous donations from several CHS Alumni – many of whom were students of Mrs. Shaw and fondly recall her impact on their lives.

The CAA will annually review and/or adjust both the number/type of scholarships to be awarded along with their respective amounts based upon CAA fiscal status.  Current CAA plans are to award two scholarships in 2022-23 and succeeding academic years – each in the amount of $2000.  CHS Alumni and others can make gifts to endow/fund CAA-sponsored scholarships.

For more information about CAA Scholarships and donations thereto, check out the Alumni Giving Opportunities section of the CAA website: Alumni Giving Opportunities – Choctaw Alumni Association (CAA).

2021 CAA Highlights

  • Too Many Heavenly Farewells Tragically, 2021 saw us bid final goodbyes and pay final respects to so many of our beloved CHS classmates, family, and faculty members. We continue to extend our heartfelt prayers and sincere condolences to all those who experienced loss.  An excellent way to honor and preserve the memory of our Alumni Angels is to make a Remembrance/In-Memoriam donation to the CAA (more details below.)
  • Fully Functional Website: The CAA website –  choctawalumni.org – became fully operational.  It is the preferred communication conduit for dissemination of all CHS Alumni related correspondence and information for all CHS Classes.
  • 2021 Reunion Weekend Events on 30-31 July:  More than 16 teams comprised of CHS Alumni, C-NP Schools Administrators, family, and friends participated in the Alumni Golf Tourney at Choctaw Creek GC. CHS Alumni from the 1950s through the 1990s gathered at the Choctaw Middle School for the CAA-sponsored Reunion/Social.  CHS Classes of 1970, 1976, 1980, and 1981 also conducted events for their respective classes during this weekend.
  • Meetings with C-NP School District Leadership:  The CAA Board met on multiple occasions with C-NP School Superintendent, David Reid, and other staff to discuss how the CAA can best partner with and support the school district – its administration, faculty, and students. These meetings were very productive.
  • Establishment & Implementation of the Ruth Elaine Shaw Memorial Scholarship:  The Ruth Elaine Shaw Memorial Scholarship eligibility criteria and the corresponding application, selection, and award processes have been finalized and coordinated with the designated CHS representatives.  CHS Alumni can now make gifts to endow/fund this scholarship; refer to the following link:  Alumni Giving Opportunities – Choctaw Alumni Association (CAA)  A special “Thank You” to those alumni who have already donated to this most worthy of endeavors.
  • In-Memoriam Donations & Recognition:  In-Memoriam donations for deceased CHS Alumni/Faculty are now recognized in the Alumni Remembrance/In Memoriam section of the CAA Website. { Alumni Remembrance/In Memoriam – Choctaw Alumni Association (CAA) }  These donations can also be designated for CAA Board approved/sanctioned projects as outlined in the Donate and Alumni Giving Opportunities sections of our CAA Website.  { Donate – Choctaw Alumni Association (CAA) }
  • CAA Participation in Future CHS Athletic Hall of Fame (HOF) Induction and CHS Football Homecoming Events:  As reported in our last correspondence, $1000 total will be allocated ($500 for each event) in support of CAA sponsorship and participation in these events. Alumni input is solicited on how best to support these events.

CAA Scholarship Established/In-Memoriam Donation Recognition/HELP NEEDED

Some relevant actions from the 09/15/2021 CAA Board meeting:

  • Ruth Elaine Shaw Memorial Scholarship:  The CAA formally approved establishment of the Ruth Elaine Shaw Memorial Scholarship.  Reference the Alumni Giving Opportunities section for more detailed info about this scholarship and how you can support  it.
  • In-Memoriam Donations & Recognition:  In-Memoriam donations for deceased CHS Alumni/Faculty will be recognized in the Alumni Remembrance/In Memoriam section.  The name and the class of the deceased will be posted therein.  Neither the donor’s name nor the amount of the donation will be mentioned; however, the CAA will respond to the donor in accordance with normal donation acceptance/appreciation correspondence practices.  In-Memoriam donations can be designated for CAA Board approved/sanctioned projects as outlined in the Donate and Alumni Giving Opportunities sections.
  • CAA Participation in Future CHS Athletic Hall of Fame (HOF) Induction and CHS Football Homecoming Events:  The Board will allocate $1000 total ($500 for each event) in support of CAA sponsorship and participation in these events.  CAA representatives will meet with the C-NP Schools Athletic Director to refine HOF involvement details.  The Board will subsequently consider options on how best to publicize the CAA during the events surrounding the annual CHS Football Homecoming – which could include participation in the Homecoming parade and/or hosting a reception/social following the parade or the game.  Alumni input is solicited.
  • Additional CAA Help/Volunteer Support Desperately NeededActive involvement and participation in CAA leadership and volunteer capacities are desperately needed – especially from CHS Alums who graduated in the late 1970s through the 1990sThis is YOUR Alumni Association.  The majority of current CAA Board leadership are CHS graduates from the 1960s era (translated, they are in their “golden years.”)   If the CAA is to remain a viable and vibrant organization supporting the C-NP Schools and our Alumni, then a leadership transition plan must be effected in the near future.  If you are willing to serve in a Leadership (CAA Officer; Board of Directors; committee head; class coordinator; reunion/event coordinator/planner; publicity; membership; donation/sponsorship solicitation; website maintenance) or in an event/project Volunteer capacity; then Contact Us  or send an email at info@choctawalumni.org.  Thanks in advance for your consideration.
